Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
